16th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Competition (Poetry Olympics)

Bots 1

Whispers of Wisdom have been invited to the 16th Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Competition (Poetry Olympics) in Chicago from 7-11 August, 2013.

We are going to America to represent YOU:

Whispers of Wisdom comprises of students that hail from townships and have worked hard, both in high school and to get into the top university in Africa, University of Cape Town (UCT). This determination amongst us has filtered into many promising aspects and avenues, such as:

• Being the 1st African Team to be invited, twice, to take part in an International Poetry Competition.

• We recently performed at the TEDXCapeTown event, 20 July 2013.

“This group performed at the latest TEDxCapeTown event and received a standing ovation. They make us proud as South Africans, and representing SA and Africa at this world class event in Chicago will be phenomenal. They have garnered significant support already, let’s help them on the homestretch, get behind them and make it happen!” – Bernelle Vester, Co-founder and Curator of TEDXCapeTown.

• We have been blessed enough to work with the likes of Talib Kweli, Mbali Vilakazi, Saul Williams, Dr. John Kani and the Baxter Theatre.

• Whispers of Wisdom is part of a continuous documentary filmed by Victoria Chan, an Italian documentary director, and has won an award at the Swedish Film Festival and was also part of the NYC and LA Film Festival.

• We’ve received various media exposure on radio, TV and newspapers namely: Expresso TV, Hectic9, SA Fm, UCT Radio, Bush Radio and the Vukani Newspaper.
It is our passion and hunger that drives us to write and speak about our circumstances.
Our poetry gives us a sanctuary to escape away from the hardships faced by the members of our communities.

Why we are crowdfunding…
Team Africa needs funding to compete in the Brave New Voices Slam Poetry Competition. This prestigious competition is open to 14 to 19 year olds from around the world who are passionate about literature and the arts and who want to represent their country.
This is the 2nd time we have been invited to this event, last year having been ripped from under feet as we stood forever waiting at the airport when promised funding was not received.
Team South Africa is the ONLY team from Africa that has been invited and as such doubles as Team Africa that has been invited.
With accommodation and meals already sponsored, all we need is funding to get there and back, with a ticket costing R20 000, and four members in the team, we need R80 000 for all of us to go and compete.

Milestone 1: The Tipping Point → We reach this Milestone and Chicago is ours to inspire, excite & experience!

Milestone 1: R20 000

One team member is sponsored to travel and represent Whispers of Wisdom: Team Africa.

Milestone 1: R40 000
The team is ultimately sponsored and will be abled to compete, as 2 members now have their tickets to travel.
UCT has kindly sponsored 2 members tickets as they are currently studying there, so we are using Thundafund to speak on behalf of the African youth and get the opportunity to travel and present as a team.
Our goal is to inform, educate and ultimately shock our communities to inspire change. Be apart of this now. Back the team by choice of rewards on the right-hand side.
We need your support, as we will be representing YOU and ensuring that the beautiful stories of Africa are heard and the many silenced voices are heard. Please spread the word! And get your friends, neighbours, boyfriends, girlfriends, classmates, colleagues – whoever – to contribute to our campaign. We repeat: we are going to AMERICA to represent YOU!!!
