COMRADE BABBLE
VENUE: INTIMATE THEATRE
DATE: 31 OCT – 9 NOV 2014
WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY ALLAN KOLSKI HORWITZ
FEATURING PETER BUTLER & LEBOHANG MOTAUNG

The phenomenon of Brett Kebble, who perpetrated the biggest corporate fraud in South Africa’s history and was then mysteriously killed in 2005 (in what has been presented as an ‘assisted suicide’) is a microcosm of the major fault lines in the New South Africa as well as being an exploration of major universal archetypes. The play COMRADE BABBLE is built round Kebble/Babble’s return from the dead in order to present the ‘truth’ of his life in the face of numerous books and articles which have painted him as a “profiteer and manipulative pirate”. It examines him from different perspectives as reflected in his dealings with a group of five other characters – free-ranging portraits of people (or composites of people) who were actually involved with Kebble.
