My Heritage Poem

Mboneni ike muila is my name
born by Naledzani Petrus
he whose midday suns is sacred
a beast that does not bask in the sun
a slender gentleman
who takes a bath with pure ones
a gentleman who does not eat soft porridge
for fear of trembling
a white liver is sacred to him
he who does not eat a parrot
the handle of a stirring wooden spoon tip is sacred
to him with a tummy
which when splashed with sand
remains unbulging flat en dry
if my midday sunshine set on me
hide me there
where my birth cord was severed
western Moroka Jabavu a place of sacks
that is where i will rest in eternal peace
when it comes to venda i have
been all over the places from lake fundudzi
a place of ancestors drums
grandmother away to the ralatives ahead
with no one looking my way
poverty provoking wild dove songs
if it was not grandmother Musundwa
even today I would not have known
who is indeed my real relative
poems en our cultural praise singing
male lion
he of the conservative salute

Myesha Jenkins – Tribute

Botsotso would like to pay homage to Myesha Jenkins, the poet and promoter of poetry who died on Saturday, 05 September 2020. Myesha was a founder member of Feelah Sistah, the all-woman poetry group that in its time made such an impact. Thereafter, she was indefatigable in organising and strengthening poetry platforms on radio and for live performance/readings. Myesha’s work was included in two Botsotso productions – the anthology Isis X and the recording Roots and Branches. Her spirit as a politically conscious, jazz-loving artist lives on and is well expressed in her seminal poem Autobiography which was included in both these projects.
