Now we, too, ride in limousines

by Matthews Phosa

Now we, too, ride in official limousines.
And humbly get:
The ‘no’ people of the struggle have learned
’Yes’ habits swiftly and without explanation.

We have become part of the history we fought against.
We are the Establishment!
We created the most unequal society on earth.
Everything that happens in this country is a direct result of what we think,
how we behave and conduct ourselves and the attitudes we choose.

Where are the ones for whom we have been waiting?
Everyone has returned from exile and prison.
Nelson Mandela’s spirit was released more than 25 years ago.
None but ourselves can claim our place.
We are our own liberator.
We are our own oppressors.
