Poems by Werner Klopper

Handel en Wandel
Op die donkerste straathoek

Onder ‘n verlate skewe ou lamppaal
Rus die blonde lokpop vir oulaas
In haar eie spatsels bloed

Sy was die volmaakte waspop
Wat met twee spits melkanne onderstebo
Sonder enige moeite aan ‘n paal kon swaai
altoos in ‘n kort swart nommertjie

Sy het bere en here mateloos getart
Natuurtaferele van melk en heuning
Oopgesprei as die beloofde land
Haar jeug nou hokgelsaan as verspilde kerswas

Stroll and Trade

On the darkest of street corners
Under an abandoned lamppost
Lies the oh so public eye-catcher
In her own pool of blood

She was the perfect barbie doll
With milkcans bursting with fresh cream
Who embraced many a sweet oily pole
In short black laced leather numbers

She cockteased bears and gents
And spread open her painted landscapes
As enticing milk and honey
Her youth now dripping over as spoiled candle wax

Ter herinnering aan Ingrid Jonker
Vir: Petrovna

Die loom goue maan
Se dwalende ligskeuring
Gloei sag oor die wrede
See se getytafel
Wat bots teen die donker strandmuur

Ingrid, die liefde se lewensvlam was jou ballade
Begeertes na aanvaarding jou versugting
Woorde was jou naaktheid
Gedoemde verhoudings jou seegrot

Meedoënloos in die skemeraand
Druis die wind oor die stormsee
‘n Skip gestrand nes jou lewensverhaal
Die lig skuil agter onweerswolke
En belig die pad na emosionele bekering

Ingrid, die liefde se lewensvlam was jou ballade
Begeertes na aanvaarding jou versugting
God het jou tydkring wreed beslis
Want jy was verban in jou eie tyd.

Stormwinde verwar jou kompasnaald

Freud se geloof in ewige nirvana
Vind weerklank in jou laaste daad

In remembrance of Ingrid Jonker
For: Petrovna

Under the gold trail of the lazy moon
The sunset fades into perpetual darkness,
Rays glowing softly
Over the cruel tide of the restless sea
That breaks coldly against the forbidding wall

Ingrid, your search for eternal love was your life’s balled
Hunger for love led to self-destruction
Your self-searching words made you vulnerable, naked and so defenceless.
And your doomed affairs reflected in the sea

The wind stirs over the stormy sea
Relentless in the bleeding sunset
Your biography is a stranded ship
It destroyed the path of your emotional search

Ingrid, your search for eternal love was your life’s ballad
Hunger for love led to self-destruction
God got your timing tragically wrong
Confining you to the wrong generation

Your collections of emotions
Exposed your vulnerabilities
And your selfish image in the sea’s reflection
Reflected the lines of fate in your hand

Ingrid, your search for eternal love was your life’s ballad
Hunger for love led to self-destruction
You were the deserter of established literature
A free thinking feminist against social injustice

Winter weather and lighting calls
Sea torrents resembled a resting place
Your trusted compass failed your journey
And beckoned you to the bottom of the ocean

Ingrid, your search for eternal love was your life’s ballad
Hunger for love led to self-destruction
Crucified by your own bloodline
Love crushed by petty politics

Everything that was
And everything that would have been
Like Jesus walking on the water
So your soul now drifts on the surface
Through generations like a ghost on the sea

Ingrid, your search for eternal love was your life’s ballad
Hunger for love led to self-destruction
Freud’s theories about nirvana
Resonated in your last earthly deed
